The Yehudi Menuhin School
The celebrated violinist Yehudi Menuhin founded his School in Surrey in 1963 to provide a place for musically gifted children from around the world to develop their talents to the highest level within a nurturing and stimulating academic environment, regardless of their economic background. Alumni include Nicola Benedetti, Alina Ibragimova, Tasmin Little and Alexander Sitkovetsky.
Today’s School provides a holistic education for 90 exceptional pupils aged from 11 to 19, with specialist tuition on the stringed instruments, piano, classical guitar, harp, and composition. Pupils split their time between their academic and musical studies and are given many opportunities to perform in front of an audience.
Concerts take place regularly in The Menuhin Hall, the School’s world class concert venue, but also in local state schools, care homes and churches, carrying on Menuhin’s belief in the importance of giving back to the community.
The School also boasts a Virtual Menuhin School which offers pupils the unique opportunity to receive specialist music education in a virtual environment, receiving musicianship, theory and instrumental training and the chance to connect with other young musicians across the globe.
It recently launched a Junior Menuhins programme to help children develop a love of music from the youngest of ages. It comprises of Baby Menuhins classes for children aged 6 months to 4 years and Mini Menuhins classes for children aged 4 – 7 years. Little Menuhins classes for children aged 7 – 11 years will be piloted in January 2024.
The Yehudi Menuhin School operates a needs-blind admissions process, admitting on the basis of talent and passion for music alone. Thanks to the continued support from Friends and supporters, it can continue to nurture the potential of the best and brightest young talent, more than 90% of whom require financial assistance to attend
